Smart Fortwo Reliability

Introduced in 1998, it is now in its third generation as an economical, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive hatchback vehicle. The Smart Fortwo is manufactured and marketed by Smart, a division of the German multinational Daimler AG. The 1998 Paris Motor Show marked the introduction of the first generation, designated as the W450 build series internally.

Overview

The hatchback microcar is available in a 3-door hatchback and 2-door convertible. It is marketed in 46 countries worldwide. Smart’s name is derived from a cooperative venture between Swatch and Mercedes: Swatch Mercedes ART. The Fortwo nameplate is related to its two-person seating capacity. As of 2004, the Fortwo was known as the smart city-Coupé. In 2017, the Fortwo has a 0.9-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 89 horsepower. Optional transmissions include a six-speed automatic and a five-speed manual.

Reliability

As a result, Smart doesn’t seem to be very reliable. The reliability Index has been less than sympathetic since owners have reported many faults. Nevertheless, some owners have reported that they have had no problems with their Smart models, and have given them high ratings for reliability. This is not the case with Smart’s hatchback. The Smart Fortwo Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, making it the 16th best subcompact car out of 21.
